Well. It helps if you are a contortionist :)

Actually, do it yourself is a good way to start and get familiar with the sensations of being filled, without having to communicate with a partner.  I am going to assume you are at least familiar with with anal penetration, and you would prepare yourself in the same way for a enema. Be sure to get the lube off your fingers though, manual dexterity will be needed.

Different positions work best for different people, but I recommend putting some towels down on the bathroom floor, and preparing the bag and hanging it on a towel rack. Here's what makes it work in a solo situation; position the clamp on the hose very close to the nozzle!

Lie on the towels on your belly or your side and insert the nozzle (you may want to practice inserting the nozzle sans hose beforehand, it feels very different from a regular toy or finger).

If you positioned the clamp properly on the hose, you can use the same hand to hold the nozzle in and manipulate the clamp, while remaining in a comfortable position. 

If this is your first enema ever, do not be disconcerted if you have a bit of "leakage" (thus the towels) or an immediate strong urge to release. Stop the fill and use the toilet and start over. Your body will get used to being filled and holding the enema in. Don't try and emulate the web sites and stories; "I took 6 quarts, etc etc", but you probably will be able to work up to a full bag without too much trouble, in one session. Don't be disappointed if you can't, though.

Don't forget to rub the cramps out of your belly!

Due to diet and medications, I'm up to doing a full enema every two days. Have you heard of others in this predicament, and how hard would it be to break this habit?

I am guessing that when you try to reduce your enema frequency you experience difficulty with having bowel movements? Not an unheard of problem in the enema world.

I am not a doctor but if I were in this predicament my approach would be this; a diet change to get fiber into my digestive tract and/or use of metamucil (or other dietary fiber supplement). Do NOT use a laxative; these work by irritating the bowel, the last thing you want to do.

Also, most of us lead a rather sedentary lifestyle these days; a little exercise aids the body's waste management functions greatly.

Finally, despite the potential embarrassment you should seek medical advice about this (I presume because one of your presumed causes was medications, which can indeed cause constipation, you are seeing a Doctor already). Your predicament could be indicative of a medical condition that requires treatment.

Got a few questions. Do you know of any newsgroups that are strictly enemas? And do you know if Beth Tyler still has an enema website? If you have not heard of her, then that answers that. I have taken herbal enemas, but only in quart to quart and a half(s). But I have gas throughout the next day. Why is that? The most I can take is just about two quarts. But then I have to expel maybe about two minutes later cause I can't hold it. How could I ever take four quarts? I wish I could try. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you. Gary

One other thought; temperature. Cold water will only exacerbate your bodies natural urge to expel because it causes the muscles to contract. You might try slightly warmer (Not hot!) water.

Herbal enemas; I can not really address, have not been there done that. I would guess though that just as certain foods cause gas, the particular herbs you used might have the same effect. Pure guesswork on my part.

I am glad that this information is here. I am a 50 year old man who was given enemas as a child. Our doctor would tell my mother to give me them when constipated or having a high fever. In the 50's it was common for kids to be given enemas. Then they seemed to die out, but I often wondered about them. I now know that many people got them and that they think about them. I think that many of us are just embarrassed to talk about them. Getting an enema as a boy was as normal and common as other medications.
